I am a barrister sole specialising in civil litigation, which means I am an independent practitioner and litigation specialist typically acting on instruction from solicitors in law firms. I work both independently and with other lawyers in a wide range of fields, from commercial and company matters to complex estates and trusts disputes. Before retraining as a lawyer, I worked as a professional books editor at an academic press, and have high-level written and oral communication skills. Though I try to keep my two lives separate, I am also a well-known New Zealand poet.

My fields of legal practice are not limited to:

  • General civil litigation and civil procedure (breach of contract, negligence, trespass, breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty, constructive trusts)
  • Complex estate, trust and company disputes
  • Family Protection Act and Law Reform (Testamentary Promises) Act claims
  • Complex Probate and other grant-of-administration applications (including resealing of grants in international jurisdictions)
  • Appointing and removing problematic trustees and executors
  • Civil enforcement
  • Debt recovery
  • Personal property securities disputes
  • Land-related disputes (including caveat, mortgage, lease, tree, access, planning and boundary disputes)
  • Property Law Act applications (co-owner deadlocks)
  • Construction disputes
  • Insolvency – both corporate (e.g. statutory demands and liquidations) and personal (e.g. bankruptcies)
  • Shareholder disputes (including prejudiced shareholder and derivative action matters)
  • Agricultural disputes and litigation
  • Employment disputes
  • Regulatory complaints
  • Defamation
  • Relationship property
  • Tenancy disputes
  • COCA applications
  • Protection orders
  • Adoption proceedings
  • Official Information Act requests
  • Environment Court matters
  • Submissions and legal document drafting
  • Appeals
  • Legal, advice, correspondence, research, writing, editing and opinions
  • Applications to Government
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution (mediations, arbitrations)
